Our weekend

It is just past midnight, Monday. The wee early hours of our 2nd wedding anniversary. I am going to attempt to untangle the cobwebs in my brain so I can go to sleep. I hope the night time Nyquil kicks in soon. I feel like there is an elephant sitting on my chest. Thankfully, typing doesn't require vocal chords. Mine are on strike.

In my fog of sleepiness that won't give way to sleep, I know this: God is good, and He gives good gifts to His children. At this two year celebration of my married life and post-college life, it is overwhelming to think how blessed I am and how often I take for granted the Giver and the gifts. In the next year, I pray I become a more demonstratively grateful person with actions that show my gratefulness. I wonder, is thankfulness without outward manifestation really thankfulness? Perhaps not. I have a ways to go.

PHC's graduation was Saturday. We attended the prelim Hyde parties; a chili-cookoff in which Stephen participated bringing his delicious creation -Brunswick Southern Chili- and the BBQ on Friday night. We arrived at the chili cookoff about a half hour before anyone else. Given another time that might have been frustrating, but we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity be outside in such a beautiful setting (see pictures). At the BBQ, the weather was quite nippy, so I sought warmth indoors and ended up spending the majority of my evening talking with a dear older woman named Virginia who grew up in the area. She was refreshing and wise, and I had a wonderful time conversing with her. Life sure is different with a kiddo. We left both parties around 9pm (an hour past Nora's bedtime!). You have a different perspective on life, and experiences you wouldn't have otherwise. For instance, at the Hydes, (and those of you who have been to these parties know how remarkable this is) we moved around the kitchen and dining room freely for the first time ever.

Graduation day dampened my spirits some, but maybe that was just because my cold was in full-swing as we approached campus. Stephen kindly took me home soon after the ceremony. I know we both missed good conversations and the catching up with dear friends that occurs at such gatherings. I, too, left feeling the future of PHC was bleak (or at least reconciliation attempts). That is probably the Nyquil talking, but I do feel sad at the current state of affairs. God said the world will know us by our love. Where is that? Why must there be a right side and a wrong side? I know I'll look back, and I'll see that God has used all these things for His glory and our good. He always does. As one graduate that day reminded us all, God glorifies Himself, and we must seek to be an active participant in His kingdom, God-glorifying work.

Nora and her girlfriends

Alicia Butterfield (5.5mos), Geneva Bradley (9 mos), Nora Shipp (9.5 mos).
Neva and Nora are protesting the photo shoot -Neva because she was hungry and Nora because she's decided there are so many more exciting things in life than having your picture taken...

...like entertaining your friends with a story.

...or crawling away to find your doggy friends (Payton and Murphey -and yes, after initial uneasiness around dogs, Nora has decided she loves them. She even enjoyed the dog kisses. I think she is a little jealous because her girlfriends both have dogs.)

Brrr.

Nora says:
Does this picture show how grumpy I am about this weather? I mean, yesterday I was barefoot!

Pics from our yard (inspired by Katie's blog)

Fallen beauty...

A common sight...

Is it odd to anyone else that there is a tree on top of our parking garage?

For those that have seen Kate and Leopold, this reminds me of that...

I like this picture...

Hey there, little lady.

This last one isn't the best, but it illustrates her "groove." She's started "dancing" to music, our cell phone rings and her musical toys.

Weekend Brew

This is our favorite coffee: Barnie's Cool Cafe Blues. I've been meaning to recommend it for weeks. Get the whole bean if you have a coffee grinder. It really is that good -a highlight of my weekend :)

Free Napster days are here again...

Kinda.

Saw this guy in an advertisement on Cooks.com as I was searching for a recipe this morning.

"Remember the days when napster was free?" I asked Stephen as memories of all-nighters with hundreds of pages of Dr. Sanders' assigned readings and my napster playlists came flooding back. (I didn't realize at the time that it wasn't exactly legal.)

Then I actually looked at the advertisement. "Napster is free again!" it said. As I exclaimed this to Stephen, he cautioned me to actually look in the news to see if it was a gimmick.

Well, it's mostly true. As the article above states, "...there is a catch. You can only listen to a song five times. After that, you have to either buy it for 99 cents or sign up for a monthly subscription."

Still hundreds of songs times five will last me quite a while :)

Free smoothies and discounted books

We took advantage of two fun deals when Stephen got home from work today. Layla IMed me around noon to tell me of the free smoothie offer. I had gone to Robeks for the first time last week. It was then with Nora grabbing at my healthy treat that I discovered she could suck through a straw. So, tonight we all three got a complimentary 120z. smoothie. Nora had some help eating her share, but she was pretty thrilled with what she got. She looked so grown up and absolutely adorable downing her mango goodie...her eyes round with excitement. I had a raspberry one; Stephen had strawberry. They were made from fresh fruit...so good!

Our second adventure was to Barnes and Noble. It being Teacher Appreciation Week, teachers received a 25% discount. The flier had been taped to our fridge for a month :) I had joked with some neighbor girls earlier in the week that my husband had a book habit. One of the gals said "in her book that was a good habit for a guy". What I said in fun then, I have reflected on since. I am very grateful that my husband's "habit" is books. For one thing, I benefit greatly having so many good books around. Books and ideas are not only Stephen's hobby, they are his career. And this path he has chosen is one in which his family can partake. For us, a teacher's work is not only the job he does, but the life we live. Hospitality, thoughtful discussion, reading, investing in others...these are some of the things we seek to have in our lives now in increasing measure. Most important of all, is the pursuit of wisdom that comes from God and His Word. I am so grateful for Stephen's love and leadership. And the newest additions to our library? Churchill's History of the English Speaking Peoples and C.S. Lewis', The Weight of Glory.

Nora has a new fascination that I helped feed at B&N. She is mesmerized with dogs. She doesn't like to be too close to the real deal, but she loves to watch them and see pictures of them. So, we went through three different illustrated dog manuals before moving on to the board books. Stephen told me he had a poster on his wall as a kid of the different dog breeds, and he spent hours staring at it. Must be where Nora gets it...

I took some pictures of Nora today (quite a feat as she doesn't sit still for a second!). I can't find my cable right now, so I'll have to post the pics later this weekend. Weekend. Ah, I like that word.
